Relationships

Say the hard thing without the damage

Most arguments aren't lost on the topic — they're lost on the first sentence. These are the sentences that keep a conversation survivable.

Wanting to be understood is not too much to ask. You’re allowed to take up space kindly.

Conflict timeout

Memorise this. It works because it names the state, protects the relationship, and gives a return time.

I'm becoming too activated to think clearly. I care about this conversation. Can we come back to it in 30 minutes?

A timeout only works if you come back. Name the time and keep it — otherwise it reads as walking out.

Instead of / try

Same message, different first three words.

You ALWAYS ignore me.

I noticed I didn't hear back today.

You never care how I feel.

I felt small when the conversation moved on.

Why are you being like this?

I'm wondering what was going on for you.

You need to fix this.

I need twenty minutes and then a proper talk.

Build your own

Four short pieces. Say them in this order.

Already said something you regret?

Repair is a separate skill, and it's learnable.
