What your body is actually doing

None of this is a character flaw. It's an old, fast, well-meaning alarm system doing what it was built to do — sometimes at the wrong moment.

Understanding the machinery makes it far less frightening. You're not unstable; you're protected.

The six survival states

There is no correct one. Most people have a favourite and a backup, and they change under different kinds of pressure.

Heat in the chest and face, clenched jaw, louder voice, the urge to argue, defend, correct or win.

What it’s doing for you

Your body is mobilising to push the threat away. It has decided the fastest route to safety is through, not around.

“Why are you always…”“That’s not what happened.”“Unbelievable.”

Burn the charge physically before you speak: push hard against a wall for 20 seconds, fast walk, shake out your hands.

Why am I triggered?

Tap each one. The line on top is the lie; the line underneath is the truth.

You actually are in danger.

Your brain thinks you’re in danger.

The alarm goes off before the facts are checked. It runs on pattern-matching, not evidence.

You’re overreacting.

You’re reacting to more than what just happened.

Today’s comment landed on an older bruise. The size of the feeling matches the history, not the moment.

You’re out of control.

Your body took the wheel to protect you.

Heart rate, breath and muscles changed before you had a chance to vote on it. That’s biology doing its job.

This means something is wrong with you.

This means something once mattered enough to protect.

Triggers form around things that hurt. Having them is evidence you survived something, not that you’re broken.

If I understood it, it would stop.

Understanding shortens it. It doesn’t delete it.

The aim isn’t never being triggered. It’s noticing sooner, dropping the intensity faster, repairing better.

What happens after you're triggered

Roughly, in a typical body. Knowing the shape of the wave makes it easier to ride.

0–30 sec

The alarm fires

The amygdala flags a threat before you consciously register it. Adrenaline releases. Heart rate and breathing speed up, muscles tense, blood moves to your limbs.

30 sec – 2 min

Thinking narrows

The prefrontal cortex gets less blood flow. Nuance, perspective-taking and impulse control all get harder. This is when most regrettable sentences get said.

2–10 min

Cortisol peaks

The slower stress hormone floods in and keeps the alarm ringing. You may feel shaky, hot, tearful or oddly energised. Nothing you decide here will be your best decision.

10–20 min

The earliest possible turn

With no new fuel — no replaying, no re-reading the message — the wave begins to fall. This is why “give me twenty minutes” is a real physiological request, not avoidance.

20–90 min

Coming down

Cortisol clears slowly. You can think again, but you’re still tender and easier to re-trigger. Good time for water, food, movement or a shower.

2–24 hrs

The hangover

Tiredness, sore muscles, shame spirals, headaches, poor sleep. This is a physical recovery, not a character flaw. Be as gentle as you’d be after a fever.

The whole wave is temporary, every single time. You have never once stayed at a ten forever.
